A dynamic and growing research consultancy based in London is looking for a bright, flexible and committed person who can apply economics, statistics and research skills to address problems in public policy. We offer challenging and stimulating analytical tasks, a high degree of responsibility and client exposure from day one.

What you might do

From day one, you will contribute to a diverse range of assignments by undertaking quantitative and qualitative research and analysis. We would expect you to quickly pick up a project and work on it for about six months. You’ll usually be part of a multi-disciplinary team.

A typical issue you would tackle may involve engaging with a client, reviewing and discussing analytical options, preparing and delivering analysis and reporting your results. We would expect you to initially work under close supervision to ensure you receive the necessary support and we will also provide the relevant training. We use sophisticated quantitative analytical approaches, including data linking and propensity score matching where you will need to communicate your work clearly. We also often have work using qualitative techniques, including literature review and interviewing individuals involved in a policy. We usually work with others, and you may help to design and manage, as well as undertake, some evidence gathering undertaken with collaborators.

What you need to have

We are looking for numerate people with excellent strategic thinking, analysis, problem solving and interpersonal skills. You will have a passion for the practical application of economics, statistics and research skills to solve public policy problems and for evidence-based decision making.

Our standard entry requirement is at least a 2:1 degree from a reputable institution ideally with a focus on economics, public policy analysis or a related discipline. We would welcome a postgraduate degree in statistics, economics or policy/social research. We would like you to demonstrate:

  • A passion for the practical application of economics or research skills to solve problems.
  • Public policy analysis skills: Proven ability to apply analytical approaches to real world problems. Ideally this would involve practical application of either quantitative methods, such as regression analysis, data preparation/visualising techniques; or qualitative approaches, or both.
  • Collaboration and partnering: The ability to work in a team and to encourage the best out of others.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills: the ability to write in a form suitable for different audiences and to communicate orally with enthusiasm and clarity as well as good oral communication skills for client deliveries.
  • Delivering at pace: Working effectively so that deadlines are met but pressures are appropriately managed across a range of tasks and projects.
  • Excellent IT: In addition to office software, ideally use of statistical, econometric or research software.
  • Experience with HM Treasury’s ‘Green Book’ and business case standards is highly desirable.
  • An understanding of datasets and methodologies to quantify the social and economic benefits of government intervention would be highly beneficial.

Benefits

We base our full-time package on comparable positions, and we are anticipating hiring a recent post-graduate. We would be happy to discuss remuneration if that does not apply to your professional background.

Currently, that means £32k per annum, rising to £35k after a six-month probation period. We offer a pension, and you will have 25 days annual leave (plus bank holidays). We would also expect to recognise how important you are to our business over the years and will reward your contribution with an increasing salary as you take on more responsibility.
