The aim of this study is to better understand the value of jobs and skills in the defence sector, and their role in driving the productivity of the sector. The study was conducted for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

The research compiled a list of defence businesses. It then identified the jobs in the Office of National Statistics’ Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) where the employer was one of the defence businesses. The survey covered around 120,000 full-time jobs, of which just under a thousand were in defence businesses. The data about these defence jobs was analysed using a variety of approaches, which together presented a picture of the value of jobs and skills in the defence sector.

Belmana were pleased to lead this research, working with the University of Middlesex. It has been published together with a Shipbuilding Defence study and on the same day as the Ministry of Defence published its National Shipbuilding Strategy.
